How each person reacts and responds to trauma is based on a variety of personal factors including our upbringing, general mood and temperament, state of mind, and culture. There is no way to predict how someone will respond to trauma however, as it is an unconscious
process. As humans though we do have predictable patterns of behavior and the physiological response to feeling threatened has remained fairly stable. That being the triggering of the fight,
flight or freeze response.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (or EMDR) therapy is an innovative treatment
for processing traumatic memories and finding a new narrative to help us heal in the present.
notes about emdr
Avoiding people, places, smells, or sounds that resemble trauma.
Body is constantly scanning for danger with a high startle response
Mood changes include apathy, irritability, and sadness
Thinking changes include lack of focus, difficulty with short term memory
Intrusive nightmares or flashbacks (vivid re-experiencing of trauma while awake).
Traumatic memories may not resolve themselves without treatment. Traumatic
memories may feel powerful, but the real power comes from your decision to reshape the memory and narrative associated with it.
Engaging in EMDR treatment guides your path away from a past that preys on you in order to restore your presence in a world that deserves you. Free consultation with an EMDR certified EMDR therapist is available.
The therapist will incorporate bilateral stimulation that
activate both sides of the brain. I prefer to use bilateral eye movements, but I can offer an alternate if eye movement's are not your preference. This mimics a brain mechanism that occurs during REM sleep.
EMDR therapy will focus on processing one memory at a time. This involves combining bilateral stimulation with the initial memory until the intensity lessens.
A shift in our belief system about the world or who we are may occur when we are exposed to trauma. We may believe the world is no longer safe or that there is something inherently wrong with us. This sort of negative belief can show up in similar situations and ultimately hold us back. EMDR therapy can challenge the belief and offer tools to reshape your narrative.
Relaxation exercises called Resourcing are utilzed so that your will be able to discontinue your focus on the memory when it's necessary.
Each person's experience is different which is why I collaborate with my clients so that together we can work out a plan that is unique to you.
